At the top of the linked page is are demonstrations of compositional structure as it occurs in paintings. I thought the line work over image was interesting for its own sake and thought of Amalie given her setting up of objects in space with lines. It might also be of interest to others.

the process so far: Week 5
1: drawing in of material- images, processes and things that might serve as metaphors for your interests.
2: bringing your material into contact with the printing process and reassessing its potential in the light of the possibilities presented by the medium
3: drawing as an idea. Using the process and material to consider the conceptual purposes of drawing.
4: Manipulation. Using the graphic tools available reprocess your visual material, look for distortions or alteration that might drive the idea forward
5. complete a work that explore the following issues:
- ground, what is the paper, how has it been chosen
- scale, this will be connected to issues of serialisation and repetition
- information, what does the drawing contain in terms of its presentation?
- character of drawing in relation to drawing's purpose
- use of the medium's potential, in either a formal or contextual sense.
This is the work that will be used in next weeks crit. Each student should present a single work and a folio of research material and development work for the crit. The material you present will be responded to in formative feedback.
The seminar room C will be booked for the purpose of next weeks crit students are asked to install work prior. The room will be open from 12 to allow this to occur.
Please post an image of work. (this should be something that you feel will likely represent the interests of your work discussed in the upcoming crit) at the same time include a short list of things you think would be worthwhile discussing in relation to your work next week. Consider what is relevant to your ideas, what would you be interested in the audience telling you.
NOTE: the crits of week 6 will be rapid fire and will require every ones attendance in the seminar room between 2pm and 6 pm

brydie- bird plate
Formally speaking I see this project as being an investigation into pattern and contour. I am interested in the types of line I can achieve using the medium of etching. I see the image of the bird I am working with as a metaphor for people. All the same but very different. A comment on urban culture.
I have been researching the use of stripes in fashion and how they were seen as a sign of visual deviation in medieval times, eg: for pirates, prostitutes and prisoners.
I plan to develop a discussion on identity, and cultural differences and similarities using the bird as a channel.
Keywords: costumes, disguise, culture, identity.
Reading:
Michel Pastoureau, The Devils Cloth.

Task 2: Week 3
Research Drawing
Produce drawings which combine two or more expressive strategies. Given the research images posted during week two these might include:
-The use of symbolism in terms of objects and processes
-Indexical drawing processes, (where there is a particular relationship between the object described and the mark used to make it's image)
-Text and written material
-The development of a narrative or character or situation responsible for the actions or outcomes exhibited in the drawings
-Different materials used in relation to each other.
Themes developed in the reference material so far include:
Images that makes use of symbol or employ objects that stand as for signs in an associative sense. Some posts indicate an intent to use material that carries a strong prior significance, recycling its past effect or history.
An engagement with the social representation of nature, images suggest an interest in the subjective organisation of worlds. The recording and inventive process in many of these images suggests the use of visual tools which mark the view. Because of this many of the images have an ideological function. they stand for a way of looking at the world, and indicate the distance between worlds.
Outcomes should involve new working processes that articulate an aspect or aspects of the ideas your working with. Each drawing should do aim to move your ideas along. Three drawings should be completed to a point where they can be discussed.
Please also bring:
The plates you are working on, and be prepared to discuss the way the research drawing might translate into printmaking.
A book or hard copy of an article that you have found interesting during the week.
